Sabudana Thalipeeth or Sago Pancake Recipe is usually made during Vrat, Upwas or Fasting. Sabudana Khichdi and Sabudana Vada are other famous preparations.

Sabudana or Tapioca should make it to every Vegan or Vegetarian’s weekly menu as it’s a great source of protein which help build muscles. It is also a great source of calcium, iron and vitamin K which are good for your bone health. They also help fight fatigue and are a great source of carbs. No wonder they are widely consumed during fasting when the body needs more energy from a single meal.

I love Sabudana and it’s a part of my weekly breakfast menu. Sabudana recipes can be tricky as they get sticky and can easily go from great to an unedible dish. I am sharing a few tips and tricks here on

How to make the perfect Sabudana Thalipeeth or Khichdi Recipe:

  • Use shallow bowl to soak Sabudana.
  • Use only as much water as required to completely submerge sabudana.
  • Soak for 4-5 hours or overnight is also fine.
  • Strain water for 10 minutes.
  • Press sabudana pearl between your fingers and if it’s soft then it’s soaked properly.
  • For Sabudana Khichdi, add finely crushed roasted peanut powder to coat each sabudana well before shallow frying them in onion and curry leaves tadka.

In this recipe, I am serving Sabbudana Thalipeeth with a Hung Curd and Coconut Ball. We can also make Sabudana Vada similarly by frying the mixture instead of shallow frying on a hot griddle. I am calling these as Sabudana Vada Pancakes because I have not used any flour here. You can add any fasting flour like Rajgira or Singhara flour to tighten the dough.

Ingredients

FOR SABUDANA PANCAKE:

  • 1 cup Sabudana (tapioca pearl) soaked 1 hour
  • 1/2 cup Potatoes boiled and mashed
  • 1/4 cup Peanuts crushed
  • 1/4 cup Onion chopped (optional for fasting)
  • 1/4 cup Coriander chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Red chili powder
  • 2 tsp Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Cumin powder
  • 4 tbsp Oil for shallow frying

FOR COCONUT BALL:

  • 1/4 cup Hung curd
  • 1 tsp Coriander chopped
  • 1 tsp Onion chopped (optional for fasting)
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic chopped (optional for fasting)
  • 1/2 tsp Red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Desiccated coconut
  • 1 tbsp Red chili flakes

Instructions

  1. Mix all the sabudana pancake ingredients together except for oil.
  2. Make patties and shallow fry on a flat griddle or make waffles in your waffle iron.
  3. Mix dessicated coconut and red chili flakes and place on a plate.
  4. Mix hung curd, onion, coriander, salt, red chili powder and garlic together and make two balls.
  5. Roll these balls in the coconut chili dry mixture till they are coated well.
  6. Serve with hot pancakes.

Avoid Onion & Garlic during Fasting
