Upma is made at least once a week in my household and we have grown up eating this humble but comforting breakfast from the South of India. This vegetable upma recipe is made with wheat semolina or rava (or rawa) and vegetables to increase the nutrition content in the recipe. Things which are made on a daily basis at home, are hardly ever thought of and we keep making the same recipe over and over again. Sadly, a boredome sets in if we don’t keep changing or tweaking daily recipes a bit.

In this post, I am making the humble vegetable upma fun by serving them as teddies. With a bit of creativity, I have seen my daughter eat much more and finishing her tiffin more often than before. I made the recipe a bit more flavorful with vegetables and more fun to look at. Go ahead and try serving the same food with a bit of creativity and see your kids gobble the food up without a fuss.

This recipe is the fourth in my kids breakfast recipe series and I am glad to receive such an overwhelming response on my Instagram account for the series. Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Roasted Rava or Sooji
  • 1 1/4 cup Water
  • 1/2 tsp Ginger grated
  • 1 small Red Chili broken
  • 2 tbsp Carrot grated
  • 2 tbsp Onion chopped
  • 2 tbsp Peanuts
  • 1 tbsp Coriander chopped
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper powder
  • 2 tsp Ghee or oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Urad dal optional
  • 2 tbsp Curry leaves

Instructions

  1. In a pan , heat ghee and add mustard seeds, urad dal, red chili, ginger and saute till raw smell disappears.

  2. Add curry leaves, onion, carrot and peanuts. Saute till roasted.

  3. Now add salt, pepper powder and water and let it come to a boil.

  4. Add lemon juice, taste and adjust seasoning if required.

  5. Once the water comes to a boil, add roasted rava slowly, while stirring to avoid lumps.

  6. Mix well, cover and cook until all the water is absorbed. Add coriander and mix again.

  7. Serve hot OR serve in a creative shape to your little ones. I have used a teddy shaper (also called rice sushi shaper) to shape upma into a teddy.
